With CATIA, users simulate the entire range of industrial design processes from marketing and initial concept to product design, analysis, assembly and maintenance.

An industry standard today, CATIA has been Dassault Systèmes' flagship solution since the company's creation in 1981. In that year, Dassault Systèmes entered into a strategic partnership with IBM to distribute CATIA worldwide. In 1999, CATIA became the most popular product development system in the world through the market's wide adoption of the digital mockup process.

Collaborative Workspace

An inter-connected environment in which all the participants in the product lifecycle (design, marketing, sales, manufacturing, OEMs, suppliers, and customers) can access and interact with each other's "In-Work" designs, thereby enhancing communication through rapid exchange, direct use, simulation and validation in 3D.

The Collaborative Workspace created in Dassault Systèmes' PLM solutions brings a new level of decision support, innovation, and collaboration that breaks down the barriers of design segregation and further accelerates the product development process.

CRM

Acronym for Customer Relationship Management.

A business strategy that helps companies manage customer relationships. For example, a CRM database enables a company to access individual customer information, match customer needs with product plans and offerings, stay abreast of customer service requirements, and be aware of previous customer purchases. CRM involves managing customer relationships on a more informed basis and tailoring them to better meet the customers' needs.

DELMIA™

Acronym for Digital Enterprise Lean Manufacturing Interactive Application.

Dassault Systèmes' PLM solution for engineering lean manufacturing processes. Totally integrated with CATIA, ENOVIA, and SMARTEAM, DELMIA enables manufacturers to digitally plan, create, monitor and control production and maintenance processes. Digital Factory

The 3D graphical simulation of a factory in operation provided by DELMIA V5.

Digital Manufacturing

The design and simulation of manufacturing processes provided by DELMIA V5 designed to optimize production costs, ergonomics, assembly line order, productivity and timing.

DMU

Acronym for Digital Mock-Up.

The virtual design and simulation in 3D of a product and all of its components. Digital or virtual mock-up eliminates the need for expensive real mock-up. Manufacturers can design a mock-up of a product in full detail, simulating all functions and anticipating interaction among the different components. Since DMU contains all the data associated with the product, it is richer than physical mock-up because all simulation and calculations can be performed on it.

ENOVIA™: For a global collaborative environment

The PLM Collaborative Environment portfolio includes:

ENOVIA VPLM – 3D Collaborative Virtual PLM of highly complex product, resource and manufacturing processes in medium and large extended enterprises

ENOVIA MatrixOne – Collaborative Product Development business processes for enterprises across a wide range of industries, including Synchronicity for Semiconductor Design Data Management

ENOVIA SmarTeam – Collaborative Product Data Management for small- and mid-sized enterprises, engineering departments of larger organizations, and across supply chains

ERP

Acronym for Enterprise Resources Planning.

A business strategy that helps companies manage their key sectors of activity, namely, purchasing, inventory, suppliers, customer service, and order tracking. ERP can also be applied to finance and human resources. An ERP system is typically based upon a number of software modules integrated with a relational database.

Extended Enterprise

A term used to describe all the actors involved in the development of a product. Expanding the list of actors that traditionally make up a company (employees, managers, board of directors), the extended enterprise also includes business partners, suppliers, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), and customers. For the extended enterprise to function effectively, these actors must be able to share and work together on common product data, hence the importance of the Collaborative Workspace created in Dassault Systèmes' PLM solutions.

Fundamentals of PLM

Dassault Systèmes' PLM mission is to help companies engineer, simulate and optimize the entire lifecycle of manufactured goods. The fundamentals of PLM are building blocks of the Dassault Systèmes solutions created to achieve that mission.

The PLM Fundamentals are: Process Centric - optimizing industry-specific business processes; Collaborative Workspaces - providing pervasive, communication and collaboration through a common, 3D work environment; Product, Process, Resources Model (PPR) - an integrated model that interlinks representations of the Product, the manufacturing Resources (tooling, factory, operators) and the production Process; Knowledge - capturing, sharing, and reapplying corporate information, know how and other intellectual property (IP) assets; CAA V5 (Component Application Architecture) - encouraging development of other PLM solutions by independent software vendors through a comprehensive, open development platform.

Knowledgeware

A set of tools that helps companies easily capture, share and reapply knowledge assets. By reusing valuable, existing corporate information, companies can optimize product lifecycle management and facilitate automated design. In addition, they can reapply design rules to new product definitions, for example with Knowledgeware, when a designer changes a part model, the related tooling models will be automatically updated based on existing technological rules.

Integrating the development, capture and reuse of know how is an essential ingredient for successful PLM implementation. Beyond the "what" of products (the components), Knowledgeware solutions capture and manage the "why" and "how" (the collective knowledge).

Morphing

Introduced in V5R9, product morphing involves applying new design specifications to existing products or processes to generate new product definitions. By enabling companies to create new products with existing knowledge, morphing helps shorten cycle times, improve market responsiveness, and maximize value.

Mechanical Design

The conception, modelization, and design of mechanical systems. From concept to detailed design, and on to drawing production, CATIA Version 5 Mechanical Design products accelerate core activities of product development. Mechanical Design products also address sheetmetal and mold manufacturer requirements through dedicated applications that dramatically enhance productivity and strongly reduce time-to-market.

NC

Acronym for Numerical Control.

The technique of controlling a machine or process by using command instructions in coded numerical format. Dassault Systèmes' CATIA V5 NC Manufacturing solution is a PLM knowledge-based product portfolio, built on an integrated single infrastructure that covers all specialized CAM applications. Examples of CATIA V5 NC Manufacturing products include Lathe, Prismatic, and Surface Machining.

PLM

Acronym for Product Lifecycle Management.

A business strategy that helps companies share product data, apply common processes, and leverage corporate knowledge for the development of products from conception to retirement, across the extended enterprise. By including all actors (company departments, business partners, suppliers, OEM, and customers), PLM enables this entire network to operate as a single entity to conceptualize, design, build, and support products.

Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions make it possible to design and develop products by creating digital mockups (a 3D graphical model of a product). With CATIA, the digital product is defined and simulated. With DELMIA, the lean digital manufacturing processes are defined. With ENOVIA and SMARTEAM, product lifecycle information, including product configuration, process knowledge and resources information, are managed in a collaborative way.

PLM Ecosystem

Dassault Systèmes' network of Business partners, Software Community Program partners (CAA V5), Technology partners, Service partners and Hardware partners. Working together to extend Dassault Systèmes' PLM offer, they form a true ecosystem of enterprises based on a community of interests.

PPR

Acronym for Product, Process, Resources.

Dassault Systèmes' integrated model that interlinks representations of the Product, the manufacturing Resources (tooling, factory, operators) and the production Process. PPR is a fundamental building block of Dassault Systèmes' PLM strategy and is found in CATIA, DELMIA, and ENOVIA. This integration means that when a user makes a product design change in CATIA, the change is reflected in the associated manufacturing processes definition in DELMIA and the resources data stored in ENOVIA.

Process Centric

Dassault Systèmes' PLM strategy to provide solutions enabling customers to develop products according to their industry-specific business processes. A process centric strategy incorporates product design processes (Design Centric) with the simulation of other stages in product lifecycle as well as industry-specific business processes.

Relational Design

A product development methodology based on the relationships (links) that are built either automatically or manually as product definition progresses. The technology behind PPR (the PPR hub) is the primary enabler for implementing relational design. In its most advanced form in CATIA, relational design can propagate changes automatically from business goals to object definitions. For instance, an aircraft mission specification (maximum flight time) could be linked to the design specification (fuel capacity), which itself is related to the wing dimension. A change in flight time or fuel capacity could update the wingspan dimension and in turn the number of wing ribs and stringers and their geometry.

SCM

Acronym for Supply Chain Management.

A business strategy that helps companies coordinate the flow of goods, information, and finances among the participating companies in the value chain. From a structural standpoint, a supply chain refers to the complex network of relationships that companies maintain with trading partners to source, manufacture and deliver products.
